The Great Summer Adventure of 2013: Part 1

Taking a road trip to Nashville to see the fam has become an annual summertime tradition for us. This year we added side trips before and after and made it a two-week adventure. The first stop was the Great Smoky Mountains. There were lots of fun new things to experience and since this was the beginning of our trip, the crankiness factor was still low.

We did a good bit of hiking. We set our expectations really low, but the kids did really well and loved it. I think it may have been the allure of the delicious trail mix we packed, but whatever works.

This bear was at the front door of our lodge. The kids were fascinated by it, and every time we passed we had to say hello (or goodbye) to the bear. Avery wanted to get her picture taken with the bear.

Mason wanted to get his picture taken with the bear too, but he was a little skeptical that the bear wasn't going to have him for lunch.

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to hike we go...

Playing in a waterfall.

We fit in some Gatlinburg attractions.

Who doesn't love a water slide?

Mason looks so wee in this picture it cracks me up.

Riding the gondola up the mountain.

There was a creek a short hike away from our lodge. Mason could have stayed there for hours throwing rocks into the creek.

Two little monkeys climbing in a tree.

Roasting marshmallows!

No vacation is complete without watching a movie in your underwear.
