Humpty Dumpty and the Great Fall

Well, we had our first visit to the ER in February. (!!)

We were downtown at the Children's Hospital complex for Mason's annual ultrasound and exam to monitor his one slightly larger kidney. This is an ordeal anyway: First we have to wind our way from the parking garage, through the maze, two sets of elevators, to the hospital building to check in to radiology. Then over to pediatric radiology for the ultrasound. Then back through the maze (and two more sets of elevators) and up to a different building to the doctor's office, where we have to wait for the doctor to get the ultrasound results and then examine Mason.

This time I had both kids with me, and that's a lot of walking for two kiddos who won't stand for a stroller. Furthermore, they wanted Mason to have a full bladder for the ultrasound. It's quite tricky to present a mostly potty-trained 2-year-old with a full bladder and dry pants. Suffice it to say that we were all cranky.

We had already been to ultrasound and made our way to the doctor's office, with a snack and a potty stop en route. In the waiting room, Mason tripped and fell into a table and cut his chin. I ran away from the desk mid-check-in to get him, blood is dripping everywhere, nurses are running over, and Mason is screaming at the top of his lungs: "Put me DOWN! I wanna go PLAY!" Since nephrologists don't exactly have the stuff for stitches laying around, they sent us over to the ER (back down through two more sets of elevators, another maze, to ANOTHER building that wasn't exactly connected without walking outside).

The good news is that they were able to glue his chin back together and did not need to sedate him for stitches. And the best news is that he has grown out of his kidney abnormality and we never have to go back. As the doctor said, "So you'll have to find somewhere else for him to lacerate his face."

Just lounging in the ER, watching a little Mickey Mouse and waiting for my chin to get numb.

Getting an escort from Big Sister when we finally got to go home.
